Go for the Gold, Enter the National Homebrew Competition

Registration for the National Homebrew Competition (NHC)—the world’s largest amateur homebrew competition for celebrating the most outstanding beer, mead, and cider—is open through Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. MT.

Presented by the American Homebrewers Association®, members are encouraged to enter their best brews to receive valuable feedback from qualified judges and vie for gold, silver, or bronze medals. Since the inaugural American Homebrewers Association National Homebrew Competition in 1979, 162,710 entries have been evaluated.

National Homebrew Competition Registration Opens Jan. 24

Mark your calendars and get ready to go for the gold! The 2023 National Homebrew Competition (NHC) registration will open on January 24, 2023, 10:00 A.M. MT.

During the registration period, brewers will register and pay for their competition entries, including style categories and judging information (as needed), as well as select their First Round judging site. First Round sites have a limited capacity and will be available first-come-first-serve. The registration period may close earlier than January 31 and move to a waitlist if we exceed the demand for competition entries.

1904 American Sparkling Ale

Mash at 151°F (66°C) for 60 minutes. Sparge at 171°F (77°C). Boil 75 minutes, adding hops and Whirlfloc as indicated.

Pitch yeast at 59°F (15°C) and let rise to 70°F (21°C). When terminal gravity is reached, condition and add finings (e.g., Biofine Clear) and store at 34–36°F (1–2°C) for at least 6 days.

Carbonate beer to approximately 2.5 vol. (5 g/L) CO2.

Styles, as a whole, are a difficult topic within the beer world. Constantly changing, ever-evolving, and hard to pin down exactly, beer styles are a topic of much debate in brewing circles. Is Mobile Brewing a Movement?

You’ve heard of thinking and drinking outside the box. What about brewing outside the box? As in, brewing outside the physical box of your kitchen and home. In 2022, my favorite brew day was a full-on mobile brew, a 1-gallon, all-grain batch of beer, lovingly made on an in-and-out, two-burner, propane camper stove connected to my Aliner Classic pop-up camper.
